By the river, Alex’s dawdling is tormented by unpleasant fantasy.
Alex had been in the Garden of Eden, been booted from it, got sent to prison, and from jail, sprung.
Alex, throughout these misadventures, had remained a swamp rat. A downhome, rank and file, street and swamp smart swamp rat.
Down by the river, this rodent, scurrying, this kid with the mike, who could swim, and wiggle, loves the light, the flute, the realm of fast breaks, a possum on the make, never fakes, testing waters with his big toe, his big big big big toe, into a big river, the mighty Mississippi.
“Let the sun evaporate river water”
–God decreed exuberantly without hubris.
