By the river, Alex’s dawdling mixes pleasant fantasy with unpleasant.
Alex’d been walking for days. Hardly resting, what really got to him was his aching feet.
Now,
Alex’s toes are soothed by the coolness of the mighty Mississippi.
This soothing is precisely what Alex needs and wants.
It is as if the cooling waters of the Mississippi are there for him, to personally attend to his needs, spiritual and physical; desires, spiritual and physical; and pleasures, spiritual and physical. The river ministered to Alex.
Alex felt as if the great river was caring and loving, a great masseuse. The great river anticipated his sore feet and aching toes and knew just what to do to be soothing.
Alex’s feet began reviving, and his toes wiggled freely, delightedly — that was what mattered.
