It was hard to believe, but Smedley’s true intention was to marry Eve. Smedley wanted to make Eve a Wickersham.

He sure had a strange way of going about it. An off-putting way. Plus, we can describe much of Smedley’s dithering as putting it off, procrastinatin’. A possum will do that.

A lot of those grunts and groans and moans Eve endured when she was under Smedley’s “command” were Smedley’s marriage proposals. Smedley was readily ready, sincere, but utterly inarticulate.

He could have been more articulate, if he wanted.

Smedley wanted to beat around the bush. While Smedley was beating around Eve’s bush, he was beating around the bush with the propositioning proposals of Eve as his property to be.

If Smedley made Eve a Wickersham, she’d never need to worry about money, or ever again need to be a working girl.

In terms of love and sex, being married to Smedley wouldn’t be so much worse from what Smedley and Eve had going now.

Eve would marry Smedley, become a Wickersham, and go to live in Wickersham Manor deep in the bayou, where Smedley’s women — or in Eve’s case, the one and only woman– might learn to love Smedley, despite Smedley’s evil temperment.
