Alex and Slade didn’t head to the same brothel, but each headed to a brothel.
Alex immediately ordered a bath; Slade, in his chosen brothel, a rub down.
One of the whores, acting on her own initiative, brought Alex a brandy, in a snifter. Alex was immediately in love. This was a good time.
The question is: when is it the ennui sits in.
Is it when you begin to worry about how much money you’ve wasted? When you realize each brandy snifter, brought by Brandy, as you sniff her, is a mistake?
The river is mistaken: Alex isn’t really there. Alex is not attentive. He is insensate. Alex, considering himself the paragon of common sense, is insensate, but maybe, commonly, sense is insensate. Alex is attuned. He is popular on radio, now and then on TV. Hearing no music, he tells no lies. This is TALK radio.
Alex is soaking, and grooving on the bubbles. Though the bubbles are fragrant, Brandy’s sensing insensate tickles Alex’s nose, inner nose, and inner inner nose.
Brandy knows what’s beneath those bubbles. Slade, the snake.
