Which do you want? Friends, or arriving– at the top?
Adair could make friends in Nebraska, but in Nebraska, Adair could never make the top. Assume this is true.
Warren Buffett made it to the top from Omaha, Nebraska, yet had a lot of friends. To name two, (or two name to), Ernie Banks and Charlie Munger. So we should assume it is false both that (1) you can’t reach the top from Nebraska, and (2) you can’t reach the top while honoring friendships.
(Warren studied at Columbia Business School which is located in NYC. In fact, CBS could be called “Off Broadway”.)

Adair loved her friends, but in this love of friends, came an urging in her of ambition, of achievement, of advancing the cause, their cause, because,

In the final analysis, it wasn’t Adair discounting the value of friends, and, in a worshipping of Molloch, a striving, for Molloch, — right to the top, because the energy came from Adair’s friends believing in her.
To abandon her friends, in favor of favor, because Adair had faith she could make new friends, as she toiled to the top, favor for favor, while keeping the love of her old friends, for whom Adair had ventured, to Mannahattas, in the first place.
Making the top isn’t slop.
