To be affirmative is to be uncritical, it is claimed– by patriots.
Walt Whitman is affirmative, but is it true he is uncritical?
I check the poem Mannahattas to see if I find criticism in there with the affirmation.
I’ve mentioned earlier Mannahattas mixes the natural world of Mannahattas with a technological and artifical world. The mix is unusual. The technological world does not destroy the natural world. That it do so would usually, stereotypically, be seen as an uncritical stance because, of course, if we are being critical one of our foundational assumptions is the nasty fight between man against man, man against nature, tarnations! Man a dirty mess versus everything a dirty mess, when there ain’t sposed be any dirty mess, or fight, at all.
