Born in the Brooklyn area, and where did that “Brook” begin? Origin of the Nile, the Ganges, the Yukon?
We know — or think we know– NYC’s most prestigious island is named Mannahattas– and we, probably in good faith, believe we know everything about the Hudson River, including its origin. Who knows? Maybe there were expeditions, funded by the Federal Government, to determine, pre-GPS, the origin of the Hudson, on the scale of Lewis and Clark.
Lewis and Clark weren’t sent off to discover the origin of a river. They were sent off, by the Jefferson Administration, to explore and catalogue the contents of Jefferson’s Louissiana Purchase.
We don’t know the aboriginal name of the Hudson River. Not even Walt Whitman did.
