Mannahatta is not a paean to democracy. It contains a paean to democracy, ironically. Ironically, or scandalously, except in Walt Whitman there is never a scandal. This is because there is no scandal in love.

I want to say there is no irony in Walt Whitman either. In democracy, mob rule, there is no irony, because everyone puts their cards down on the table, sure they do.

In mob rule, mob can be rhymed with Bob, which can be rhymed with rob, which can be, extended, with robbery. Going to prison to have a sweet baby, what was expected?

“We” can cite II Corinthians, if necessary.
