Adair is becoming attached to Puff and Billy, a piglet and goatlet.

There is magic here.

If need be, Adair could’ve become attached to an old rag wrapped around a cross made of two cornstalks lashed together by dried corn leaf strips.

It is of interest a raggedy anne preserves the idea of the humble and minimal means necessary (yarn for hair, an appearance of being crudely stuffed and sewn, buttons for facial features, etc.) to attach a girl’s heart and soul, while nevertheless betraying these, in commodity format.

The first kind of attachment, despite all appearances to the contrary, happens within an abundance– of joy, among others.

All the while, everything is in flux. While Adair remains a young girl throughout this summer and the next few, this is not to be forever. Puff rapidly puts on weight and is transformed, less cute with each passing week.

Billy dies, suddenly and unexpectedly.
