Jakob recommended Puff and Billy as suitable replacements for the storebought raggedy anne. Jakob was penny pinching, but more importantly knew about bang for the buck. Jakob understood the most expensive is not only not the best, but, factoring in how much money is paid for nothing in return, an irksome net loss.
Puff and Billy were rejects, there for the taking, and actually in need of love. They would respond to love– with love. Love and devotion. Even if Adair did not know how to handle their problems properly, she’d, before she loved them, care for them, properly.
Jakob did know how to handle Puff and Billy’s problems properly. He was in the background, watching Adair capably dealing with problems a six year old girl can reasonably be expected to handle. Without inflicting guilt or chastisement on Adair, when a problem a six year old couldn’t conceive, Jakob would very gently whisper a hint to Adair, and Adair would take it from there.
