Adair had, by the way, access to kittens, and puppies.
She had, remarkably, access to ducklings and goslings.
She didn’t have access to raggedy anne, the perfect doll, perfect because raggedy anne was mass produced, and, though economies of scale were in effect, too dang expensive.
Jakob could see the raggedy anne was not only not better than– anything a beautiful, fetching, young girl might attach to, and care for– say a real rag, or even a dust bunny, or a fragment of baby blanket, so worn almost to be a dust bunny, though in no way would Jakob ever wrap Adair in a dust bunny, although, in a pinch, Jakob would build Adair a sod hut.
