Adair is young, beautiful, talented, and intelligent.

Why, by the way, do we need both talented and intelligent? Why doesn’t talent include intelligence, or vice versa? Is it the case her being talented in Nebraska is emphasized, while in NYC, it will be her intelligence? Or the other way around? This cannot be answered, except to note the two terms would not be interchangeable, and thus their differences questionable, if their concepts held no intersects.

On the morning of her departure from Nebraska, Adair is home with her family.

Is it by talent or intelligence Adair stares down into the swirls of her cinnamon roll? Is it a Vulcan mind meld, her father does so simultaneously? Do they both possess a talent for Vulcan mind meld? Spok was the most intelligent of the Starship Enterprise’s most talented crew.

I want to make a detour into Star Trek. It is a detour, but the destination is fixed.

Spok was a halfbreed. He could relate to homo sapiens, (NB: I italicized homo sapiens, though I could just as easily underlined it, as I had been taught in high school and college was absolutely the most important thing in biology. You damn well better underline genus and species, or else! Or else you’ll get humanely and scientifically dissected like a frog!) as well as he could relate to Vulcans, their characteristic phenotype he wore, in both disgrace and glory.

Yet Spok, for all his “intelligence” (talentless intelligence) would’ve been nothing without Captain Kirk. The leader. The mover and shaker. The rainmaker. The sun baker, the tau beta zeta booza palooza, sunshine of the universe’s eye. Maybe Captain Kirk was the talent to Spok’s intelligence. They were a couple– and a team. And voyagers. On the Star Ship Enterprise, boldly going where no man (apparently the Vulcans had been, though) or woman (this, though, is a concession to political correctness, much in the fashion of UN headquarters being located in Mannahattas, and UNESCO.)

Delicate aroma of cinnamon roll flowing up through the sky (Stardate, gate, Uroguay 101– don’t drop out).
