We speak of good intentions.
We also say,
“The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.”
So, how can the good intentions therefore be considered good? What’s good about them?
The world would be worse without good intentions.
On the other hand, don’t all roads, however paved, lead to Hell?
Looks that way to me.

You could wish Adair and her parents could “follow their gut”, but their guts, truth to tell, are tied in knots. If they followed their guts, they would follow them into ever tighter, more intolerable, strangling knots. These strangling knots would emit guilt–
Nobody has done anything wrong.
