On the morning of her departure from Nebraska, Adair is home with her family.
Adair and her parents are in the kitchen of the farm house built by Adair’s father.
The three of them shuffle around, as if very old, or very stiff and sore.
Adair is young, but even her parents aren’t that old– certainly not shuffling- around old.
An argument can be made the three are very stiff and sore. As I’d mentioned earlier, they’d spent the previous night tossing and turning. Tossing and turning in trepidation is tough, body– and soul. There’s no rest in it.
Adair’s mother had been up a good hour before the other two, preparing a special breakfast.
No one has an appetite, not even for the beautiful cinnamon rolls the mother has baked with such care and artistry. Adair and her father have selected the cinnamon rolls from the other food, hold the rolls in their hands, but can’t lift the rolls to their mouths.
Cinnamon rolls have a spiral structure. Adair and her father look down upon, and contemplate, this spiral structure. The delicate and delicious aroma emerges from the spiral, tantalizingly. At this moment in time, also, unfortunately, nauseatingly.
Adair is not being sent off to school. If she was, the vibe in the kitchen would be less edgy.

Who knows the wherefore and why of Adair sent off this dark morning?
Absolutely nobody.
Nobody in this world, or the next.
Don’t worry, though. If Adair’s adventure goes poorly, there will be plenty of guilt and shame to spiral around, as if ignorant people can be held to account for their own ignorance…
…Especially when you can be ignorant of your own ignorance, particularly the expanse of it.
