Within the simple story,

A beautiful young woman, Adair, leaves her loving Nebraska family and community to go to NYC. There, she meets a woman named Ghislaine.

There are numberless sub-stories.

Starting with,

(1)

On the morning of her departure from Nebraska, Adair is home with her family.

Neither Adair nor her parents had trouble waking that morning, for neither Adair nor her parents had slept well that night. They had tossed and turned. Adair in her twin bed, (Adair’s twin being Ghislaine, and we will get to that.) Adair’s parents in their full bed, full with the two of them. As Adair’s parents tossed and turned that night, it was more than full.

They should have “sprung” for a queen-sized, or king-sized, if they were going to send their daughter off to the big city, which, being hip themselves, they knew to call “The Big Apple”, for they were hip and deeply in love. They had a small, kitchen-garden sized apple orchard within the green patch of lawn they had, to conform with expectations, planted, as a square within some bigger square…

… Square of the unknown.
