Much of John Wayne’s best work was done under the direction of John Ford.
Without John Ford, John Wayne might not have amounted to much.
Of course, even on a bad day, or life, John Wayne amounted to much more than Ron Reagan.
Ron Reagan rode in on John Wayne’s coattails, while John Wayne, on John Ford’s.
Adair’s story is a western, under my interpretation of Nebraska as a western, not a midwestern, location in space-time.
This is where it gets a bit interesting, or, as the French say, “intéressant”. Or, beyond that, “incroyable”.
John Ford worked other genres, and in all likelihood, the western was least significant, artistically and intellectually.
John Ford directed Tobacco Road, and what’s more, Grapes of Wrath. These aren’t westerns, in the strict sense of the word.
