If anyone would be entitled to speak of being educated at “The School of Hard Knocks”, it would be Adair’s dad.
He had been knocked around. He had not been kicked around, as Richard Nixon said, after losing the gubernatorial race in California in the early 60s.
Nobody who has genuinely been knocked around speaks about being knocked around, nor of having been educated at “The School of Hard Knocks”.
Adair’s dad had been in, and had known, NYC.
He had gone in the opposite direction of Adair now: from NYC to Nebraska, while Adair would go Nebraska to NYC.
He had hard knocks forcing him from NYC to Nebraska, but he does not send Adair to NYC so she can get hard knocks to leave NYC, to return.
Adair’s dad would do anything to spare Adair hard knocks. You’d think all he had to do was issue Adair a “NO, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO NYC.” How hard, that?
