A beautiful young woman, Adair, leaves her loving Nebraska family and community to go to NYC. There, she meets a woman named Ghislaine.

However much this story may vary, this part never varies,

There, she meets a woman named Ghislaine.

Everyone, or no one, of ghosts, or whisps of sea breeze, or sea gulls, or night hawks, or long-extinct aboriginals (extinct before Ghislaine was born), meet a woman named Ghislaine.

This is the constant.

To us, this might mean the story is about Ghislaine; she being the important element, or “the essence”. No, this is not so. (My only intention now is to point out Ghislaine is definitely the invariant. She is in the role of the invariant.)
