We’re in NYC, a specific location.
Before we can get to this specific location (9 East 71st Street), we must specify a time, too.
Before we can specify a time, we have to remember NYC has a general location, and a general revocation, or, an era of time.
I quote Walt Whitman,
“I was asking for something specific and perfect for my city,
Whereupon lo! upsprang the aboriginal name.”
I SHIT YOU NOT.
Walt Whitman said this.
In a great, pure, free, free verse, poem.
He goes on to say,
“Now I see what there is in a name, a word, liquid, sane, unruly, musical, self-sufficient,
I see that the word of my city is that word from of old,
Because I see that word nested in nests of water-bays, superb,
Rich, hemm’d thick all around with sailships and steamships, an island sixteen miles long, solid-founded,
Numberless crowded streets, high growths of iron, slender, strong, light, splendidly uprising toward clear skies, “
Walt Whitman informs us Mannahattas is sixteen miles long.
The guy is a genius, and I love him. He and Oscar Wilde will assist us as we approach our destination, our teleos, 9 East 71st Street.
